Happenings

Whenever school starts I somehow get busier even though two of my kids are gone everyday for a while.  I don't understand it but I guess that's my excuse.  Here's what's happening...
John has been traveling a lot lately for work and we are starting to count down how many classes he has until he is done with his MBA.  That will be a nice day!  In September we did the Whole 30 with some friends--for 30 days we ate nothing processed, no dairy, no sugar, no legumes, and no grains.  It made for a long slightly depressing month (especially the weekends!) but John lost a lot of weight and felt really great.  I felt a lot more tired than I thought I would for eating so perfectly--(I dragged myself through my crossfit workouts and by 9 pm at night I was DEAD) but I'm glad I did it--I did not think I could go that long without dairy!  We felt accomplished to finish.  If I wasn't so self-conscious and private I would have posted before and after pictures but that's just not me.
We finally got Iris's headstone and my mom's bench!  I think they turned out well--it's nice to have something there now instead of an empty grassy spot.  I love that they are together in the same grave.  The grieving is coming along.. some days it hits and I feel a huge gaping hole in my life where my mom or my baby should have been--but most days I feel okay, even happy.  Sometimes losing Iris seems like it was just a bad dream--we had her for such a short time it barely seems real.  I had a priesthood blessing after she died and I was told that "All is well with Iris" and that was so comforting and has been one of my inspirational themes  the past year so we decided it would be fitting for her headstone.  The kids thought it would be nice to leave Grandma and Iris an apple--thus the apples--we had just picked a big basket.  I love the Fall!

 The kids happenings:

Isaac has been doing a home preschool where some moms in my neighborhood each take turns teaching the kids a couple times a week.  He has LOVED it.  Some kids have been tearful and fearful of going but not him--he loves the social and the fun.  I think that is just his personality--he always loves going to the gym with me.  He's pretty easy going because he even loves going to the store with me and will often request "more stores."  I say he's easy going but there's some things he's not so easy going--I honestly didn't think he would be potty trained until kindergarten but this past week he somehow figured it out--it definitely wasn't me pushing him because this is one area he is quite stubborn about.  Since he figured it out and decided he prefers his Cars underwear to diapers he hasn't had any accidents.  I'm shocked--and grateful for this little miracle. :)  The next step is to convince him to go without taking all his clothes off and having me hold his shirt each and every time.  Isaac still eats the most breakfast of all of us and still sleeps on our floor--but potty training is a huge step and I can hardly believe we are done with diapers for a while (although Lucy believes Grandma is changing Iris's diapers in heaven).  He is getting so big too fast--so I guess I should enjoy his presence in my room while I can.

Lucy is enjoying Kindergarten.  She likes to get her homework and reading done as quickly as possible so that she can play with friends-that is probably her favorite activity.  She also loves to ride her bike and play with her "pet shops" which Isaac calls "Ket Shops" which sounds a lot like Ketchups.  It gets a little confusing sometimes.  Yesterday was her last Fall soccer game--she scored two goals and was pretty excited about that!

Esther is loving 2nd grade--especially since she has lots of good friends in her class.  She is an excellent reader and finds any spare moments she can to read fairy books.  She started piano and is doing really well--except when she doesn't want to believe that her mom knows how to count her music. :)  Esther loves to play with friends too--that is the privilege she hates to lose the most... alas sometimes it happens.  Esther had her last soccer game and first basketball practice yesterday--she likes both and has become a force on her soccer team.  Esther is also great big sister and we talk a lot about how good she would have been with Iris.

Esther decided to get an early start on her letter to Santa and I couldn't resist having a copy for the blog.

She REALLY likes fairies--books, movies, toys, and real live ones.  :)

Last night we took the kids to a drive-in movie--Hotel Transylvania--with some friends.  I haven't been to a drive-in movie since college so it was pretty fun to go and cuddle up in the back of the truck and watch a movie.  We decided we need to make it an annual fall tradition.  (in the summer the movies don't start until 9:45--way after bedtime! whereas in the fall they start around 7:30).  Isaac still fell asleep but the girls loved it too and the movie was really funny.

Katie - I think about you daily and pray that you are happy. I love Iris' headstone and your mom's bench. Next time we're up, I'll have to visit it.
Congrats on the potty training. It's such a hard thing (in my book) and I'm dreading doing it with my 2 1/2 year old in the next several months. Hope you're doing well.
