Today I started telling the girls about one of my favorite Valentine's Day memories. Then John inserted that he hoped it was one of the V-days with him and then reminded me of the time when we hadn't even started dating and he had his roommate drop a rose off for me because he was out of town. So I retreated and agreed that it was one of the better Valentine's days (honestly) in my life. I remember I thought his single rose act was much sweeter than the huge bouquet of flowers and fancy box of chocolates I got from another guy on that same day because it required more thought and effort, and I just liked John more. I'm really glad that worked out. I love having a perma-Valentine.
Anyway, one of my OTHER favorite Valentine memories... growing up my Mom was always the Valentine "fairy" and for that week we would find little treasures (notes, coupons, candy, etc...) on our beds when we came home from school. On Valentine's Day she would include a note often written by my dad telling us how much we were loved and and why. One year, when my mom was too sick to do it, my dad had to substitute for my mom. My sister and I came home and found our treasures--a note, candy, and fingernail polish. The funny thing is the finger nail polish was yellow and black. It still makes me smile. It must have been on clearance or something (my dad is Mr. Frugal) but I thought it was so sweet and funny that he made the effort (although I'm sure my mom gave him instructions). I hope I can be as good to my kids as my parents were to me. Happy Love Day.
